The better news: this article also shows you when that setting is a crutch, and how to fix the actual cause so you stop fighting it on every print.<\/p>\n<h2>What elephant&#8217;s foot actually is<\/h2>\n<p>Elephant&#8217;s foot is a defect where the first layer (or first few layers) prints wider or bulges out compared to the rest of the part. The print usually course-corrects after about 5\u201310 layers, but by then the base of the part is the wrong size. That matters when dimensions matter: a box and lid won&#8217;t seat together, a press-fit bearing won&#8217;t drop in, and bolt holes near the base end up undersized.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t confuse it with warping. Warping is when the first layer <em>detaches<\/em> from the bed and curls upwards \u2014 a completely different problem with its own causes. The base layer stays soft too long, then the weight of the layers stacking above it squashes the molten plastic outwards. The usual suspects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bed too hot.<\/strong> An elevated bed temperature keeps the first layer soft for too long, so it spreads under load. This is the single most common cause.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nozzle too close \/ Z-offset too low.<\/strong> If the gap between nozzle and bed is too small, the first layer gets squished harder than intended and material spreads beyond its footprint. Levelling inaccuracies make this worse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooling starting too late.<\/strong> Most slicers slow or kill the fan on layer one for adhesion, but cooling should kick in by layer two or three. Leave the fan off too long and elephant&#8217;s foot is almost guaranteed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Over-extrusion on the first layer (rarer).<\/strong> Too much filament makes an overly thick base that takes longer to cool and is more prone to spreading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The core fix: Elephant Foot Compensation in the ATN Slicer<\/h2>\n<p>The quickest, cleanest fix lives right inside our own <strong>ATN Slicer<\/strong> \u2014 our OrcaSlicer-based slicer with the AI print-doctor built in. That one field is where you bring the bulge back to the correct dimension.<\/p>\n<p>What it does: instead of you sanding the bulge off afterwards, the slicer shrinks the first-layer toolpath inward, so the spread brings it back to the right size as it prints.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recommended value:<\/strong> set it in the <strong>0.10\u20130.20 mm<\/strong> range for a standard 0.4 mm nozzle. We&#8217;d start at <strong>0.15 mm<\/strong> and adjust from there \u2014 nudge up if the base still bulges, back off if the brim stops gripping the part.<\/p>\n<p>Compensation works best when it&#8217;s paired with a dialled-in first layer, not used to paper over a sloppy one. Before you lean on the setting, get these right:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Slightly reduce first-layer flow.<\/strong> Knock the first-layer flow back a touch (around 95%) so you&#8217;re not laying down an over-thick, slow-cooling base that wants to spread.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Correct first-layer temperature.<\/strong> Don&#8217;t run a hotter first layer than you need for adhesion \u2014 extra heat keeps the base molten longer and feeds the bulge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Accurate Z-offset \/ first-layer height.<\/strong> Set the Z-offset so the first layer is squished enough to stick but no more, and keep the initial layer height at your standard layer height or slightly higher.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Get those four things right and a 0.15 mm compensation value will usually clean up whatever&#8217;s left. The feature has been in PrusaSlicer since version 2.2, and official Prusa profiles ship with it on by default, on purpose, because it works. PrusaSlicer&#8217;s compensation is also adaptive: it detects thin lines in the first layer and avoids over-shrinking them so small features don&#8217;t get eaten away. The ATN Slicer inherits the same OrcaSlicer-style compensation \u2014 the difference is the built-in print-doctor that tells you what to set in the first place.<\/p>\n<h3>Things that look wrong but aren&#8217;t<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The preview looks gappy.<\/strong> The compensation accounts for squish, which the preview doesn&#8217;t visualise. In reality the squished-out material fills that gap. Trust the print, not the preview.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distortion where thin meets thick.<\/strong> Adaptive compensation can show odd geometry where a thin feature joins a chunky one. It&#8217;s mostly a preview artefact and only affects layer one. If it genuinely bothers you, set compensation to 0 and fix the cause with hardware tweaks instead.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common mistakes<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Setting it too high.<\/strong> With compensation on, the brim connects more weakly to the model. If your brim isn&#8217;t gripping the part on the printed plate, your value is too high \u2014 back it off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Using it to paper over bad settings.<\/strong> Elephant foot compensation is a crutch for a poorly dialled-in first layer. Don&#8217;t compensate for one bad setting with another \u2014 get your filament diameter and extrusion multiplier right first, then tune.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Expecting it to fix more than layer one.<\/strong> The setting only shrinks the first layer; every layer above is full size. If your elephant&#8217;s foot extends several layers up \u2014 which happens with certain model\/filament combos \u2014 the setting can&#8217;t help. That&#8217;s your signal to fix the root cause.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Hardware and process fixes to combine with (or instead of) compensation<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;d rather kill elephant&#8217;s foot at the source \u2014 or the compensation setting isn&#8217;t enough \u2014 work through these. They tackle the heat and squish directly.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Raise the Z-offset.<\/strong> If layer one is being over-squished, lift the Z-offset by 0.05\u20130.1 mm. Trade-off: shifting first-layer height changes Z accuracy. X and Y stay spot-on, but total Z height shifts by whatever you changed. For most parts that&#8217;s negligible.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lower the bed temperature.<\/strong> Drop it 5\u201310 \u00b0C. PLA is usually happy at 50\u201360 \u00b0C, PETG at 70\u201380 \u00b0C. Start low and only go up if parts start lifting. Set the initial layer height to your standard layer height or slightly higher.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engage the fan earlier.<\/strong> Bring cooling in at layer two or three so the base solidifies before the weight above presses on it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use a raft.<\/strong> A raft acts as a throwaway buffer between the part and the plate, so the elephant&#8217;s foot forms on the raft instead of your part. If the brim stops gripping the part, you&#8217;ve gone too high; if the base still bulges, nudge it up in small steps while also checking your first-layer flow, Z-offset and bed temperature. The printed part will be correct even though the preview looks odd.<\/p>\n<h3>Does elephant foot compensation affect the whole print?<\/h3>\n<p>No. It only shrinks the first layer \u2014 every layer above prints at full size.
